Make your tv smile: Musical Mayhem Marathon!

Back in college, we used to have movie marathons all the time. I’ve seen all the (original) Indiana Jones movies back-to-back – & let me tell you, that makes for a long night of Nazis! Marathons are a great way to spend a fantastic evening on the couch with friends – make some popcorn, pour some wine, & sit back & enjoy!!
I was a music major, so musicals are near & dear to my heart. & with the Oscars on Sunday, why not start with the 2003 Best Picture winner, Chicago!
The music is so fantastic, & the adaptation from stage to screen is so imaginative. I can’t imagine this musical being any better! Catherine Zeta-Jones truly made the role of Velma her own, & it’s what she’ll be remembered for the most. The Cell Block Tango remains one of my favorite film sequences of all time. Exquisitely done.
For a bit of fun, watch Mel Brooks’ The Producers. Yes, it’s a screen adaptation that’s far from perfect, but there’s little that’s as funny as watching Matthew Broderick & Nathan Lane ham it up on camera. It’s as close as most of us will ever get to seeing those two in these roles on stage, so sit back & enjoy! Be sure to listen to the credits – Will Ferrell does a version of Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop called The Hop-Clop Goes On – it’s hilarious & a great piece of comic genius.

To finish off your evening of awesome, put on that thrilling monster of a musical, A Chorus Line.
Apparently some think this one of the worst adaptations in history, but I completely disagree! It’s a great way for those of us outside showbiz to really see an aspect often ignored, especially in film productions: the chorus!
The show is filled with amazing dancing, the like of which this Ohio farm girl had never seen prior to watching the movie in seventh grade. You’ll laugh at the crazy 80s outfits (especially the Power Rangers-esque ensemble on one of the main characters), & find something of yourself in at least one of those at the audition. Songs like Dance 10, Looks 3 & Surprise! will have you laughing out loud with your friends.
If you’ve never seen this movie, & yet call yourself a fan of musicals, you’ve got to put this on your must-watch list. You’ll love it – & it’s sure to make your tv smile!! =D
