Skirt season is upon us!

The skirt is my favorite fashion item. Nothing is more versatile or more flattering on everyone! Heck, even guys look good in them – who doesn’t love a cute guy in a kilt?

Once spring hits, I wear skirts nearly every day. I find them more comfortable than shorts, & because they’re so versatile, I can wear them with anything. Denim skirts, of course, work in every situation. I also adore the peasant skirt, & stocked up on several a few years ago when they were wildly popular. They’re so nice & cool in the hot summer months, & pair quite easily with all those t-shirts you’ve had since high school – or wear those crazy patterns with a white or black top, & you’re set for work.

Skirts are also really, really easy to make. Even if you have just limited sewing experience, you can make them. Skirts are like the scarves of the sewing world – great for the beginner! I have a bunch of fabric from last year that I never used that I’m definitely going to this year. I did a quick search of a few different styles & came up with these:
- Peasant skirts
- Wrap skirts
- Simple A-Line skirts

The key to wearing a skirt is to find the right length & style for you, but most importantly, determining what you feel the most comfortable in. Just about everybody looks good in a pencil skirt, which hits just above the knee, but watch for those styles that have a severe taper – they can add width to your hips, & I don’t know anyone who wants that! Ditto for the A-line silouette which looks good on nearly every single body type out there.

If you want to create the illusion of curves, look for skirts with knife pleats (think school uniforms) or the infamous bubble skirt, which people either love or hate. If you want the opposite, stay far away from these styles!!

Longer skirts that hit mid-calf or below look the best on those with long legs, so if you’re short (like me), my advice is to stick with skirts that hit just above, at, or just below your knee. eHow has a great article with tips for choosing the right shoes for a knee-length skirt or dress:

“Consider where you’ll be wearing your outfit. For a casual job, loafers and flats are excellent choices. For a dressier job, stick with pumps. Go out on the town in strappy, high-heeled sandals. When attending summer parties, opt for the more casual wedge-heeled sandal.”

I agree with them for the most part, but my advice is, when in doubt, wear flats. I sincerely hope that the ballet flat never goes out of style, because it just goes with everything!

Now for the fun: creating outfits to go with your newly purchased or made skirts!

whimsy

I created this whimsical set just to see what I could do with that adorable skirt! I love the color play between the natural hues of the shirt, skirt, & boots. This is just the perfect little outfit for a spring shopping day! I’d wear this while skipping class to hit the sales at my favorite shopping mall, then out to meet my best friends for dinner at our favorite local spot.

workin' girl

We’ve all gotta grow up & go to work, I guess. This is a nice reprieve from the black power suit; it still looks professional but lacks the stale look of all black. You could wear this to your day job in that fancy corporate office, remove the jacket & meet that cute guy for dinner across town.

casual friday

I named this set “Casual Friday” because it’s what I like to wear when I’m out running errands. Well, actually, it’s what I’d like my daily uniform to be, but I suppose I can only imagine. It’sfeminine, it’s flirty, it’s casual – it’s so me. I want to run out & find that sweater right now! Denim skirts can be dressed up with a nice button-up shirt & ballet flats for work, or paired with a t-shirt & sneakers for play. Denim skirts are to me what the LBD is to most women – the ultimate fashion weapon.

Don’t believe me? Look at this:

denim lesson

Five very different outfits for five very different lives. One very awesome denim skirt. Office, coffee shop, date night, executive, dressy casual. Every woman needs an amazing, perfectly fitted denim skirt in her closet!

So here’s my question for you guys: where’s your favorite place to find skirts? I always have a lot of luck each spring with Old Navy, & I have a few from Target as well. What have you found so far this year?
